As is happily usual, the second novel in a series surpasses the first. Kathy Lynn Emerson's second work Face Down Upon an Herbal, featuring herbalist/sleuth Lady Susanna Appleton upholds this trend. Two years after the first book, Face Down in Marrow-Bone Pie, Susanna's work on herbs has been published but with only her initials, giving the great many purchasers of her book no indication that the author is a woman.

While her husband is sent to Scotland on an errand for the queen, Susanna receives an order from Elizabeth to assist Lady Madderly, who is writing her own herbal. It does not take Susanna long after her arrival at the castle to realize she's been manipulated by the wily queen. A month prior to her appearance, a Scottish lord was murdered and found lying upon a copy of Susanna's published herbal. Shortly afterward, the Lady of the castle is struck down. The list of those who might want to do in the Scottish lord extends to nearly everyone in the castle who had opportunity, but no clear, discernable motive can be determined. The lengthy roster of suspects includes the master of the house, his ugly and bitter sister, and his handsome horseman.

Lady Appleton and her husband's half-sister Catherine Denholm continue their work on the herbal and investigate the murders and their possible connection to counterfeiters working in the area. Thus the reason for Queen Elizabeth's sending Sir Robert Appleton to Scotland and his wife to Madderly Castle becomes apparent. Although the monarch doesn't appear in the novel, Emerson illustrates Good Queen Bess's shrewdness and her apparent disregard for her subjects' feelings in getting her way.

There is more interaction between Lady Appleton and her husband, in this second work than in the first, and more animosity which confused me. In the first novel, Emerson makes it clear that there is no love lost between the couple, who are married by arrangement. But they had a congenial relationship. In this story, there is open hostility before they manage to forge a working relationship to solve the mystery that the Queen has embroiled them in. At the end of Face Down in Marrow-Bone Pie, Susanna manages to get a legal document that releases her from any control by her husband. Now she blatantly dislikes him and makes it clear she does not want him at Madderly Castle with her. His arrival for the holidays gives them ample time to call a truce and conspire.

Emerson adds more intrigue and suspense to her second work using the backdrop of the conflict between Elizabeth and her cousin Mary to the north as the basis for conspiracy, counterfeiting and murder. It was unclear as to what the nature of the counterfeiting was. The only specific incident of forgery noted in the novel was a fake genealogy used to gain a higher station in life. The implications of falsified documents to Elizabeth's grip on the throne were vague at best, and it seemed as though the queen sent several agents to investigate the counterfeiting for her own amusement rather than her safety.

What Emerson does specify clearly are Lady Appleton's recipes for physics, poultices, salves and unguents for binding battle wounds, curing body aches and ills. During one scene, Susanna rattles off ingredients for several potions in the span of two pages in a data dump, where specific information is concentrated into one area and is mainly for educating the reader instead of entertaining them. It doesn't come off well in dialogue but in this novel wasn't too awkward.

Again, this second outing was better than the first and Emerson took the opportunity to deepen all the characters, enhance the rift between Susanna and Robert, and marry off Catherine Denholm. She also crafted a complex and masterful plot that keeps the readers' interest. I found myself looking forward to picking it up again whenever I could make time to read. It's sure to delight all mystery fans.

A Spire makes one think of a nice tall structure similar to the Washington Monument, nice to view and if energetic, climb the stairs inside to the top for a grand view. Patterson's Spire-not so! The Spire is located near the center of Caldwell College and over the years has been the center of some serious problems involving students and sometimes faculty. The stairs inside are narrow and very steep and lead to a top where there are bells. Mark Darrow who was a student at the time and was a football hero found Angela Hall murdered at the base of the Spire. Ever since the murder Caldwell College had been in decline and needed someone to get the school moving forward once again. When Darrow had found Angela, Lionel Farr was a teacher at the school and one of the first to reach the terrible scene by the Spire.

Years later Farr had summoned Darrow to come to Caldwell wanting to discuss something regarding the school. It seems that $900,000.00 had disappeared from the school funds and Farr told Farrow his thoughts of who was involved, followed by asking Darrow to become President of Caldwell College and help get the school going forward and finding the missing money. A good friend of Darrrow's had been accused of Angela's murder and was found guilty and was in prison. Farr had a daughter younger than Darrow but Taylor had always liked Darrow since she was seven-years old.

Darrow accepted the job as president, knowing that Farr was the provost and they would work together with each other along with the College Board. Darrow started his new job with many questions in his mind about the murder of Angela many years ago, the person serving time for that murder, and about the missing money. He had his hands full but he took his time doing much research and asked many questions of former friends that still lived in the area, the police whose chief was a rookie cop at the time of the murder, and any other former students that were working in the area or nearby. Along his path of inquisition he started to have many feelings for Taylor, Farr's daughter who was now a beautiful woman.

Patterson spins a great story that some times goes back in time to the time of the murder so Darrow could remember details more thoroughly. He visited the prisoner, Steve, in prison quite a few times, still feeling Steve might not be guilty. You will not be disappointed in this excellent story. It is written very well and doesn't lose you in its time exchanges or characters from the past or present. I highly recommend it. You will be kept in suspended doubt as to who did what.

A well-written story that could be out of today's headlines with the struggles that exist in Pakistan in their attempt to determine their own destiny and governing body. This particular story has at its central core the battle between Pakistan and India over Kashmir, with each claiming Kashmir is theirs. But this story goes far beyond that battle and encompasses the various private and governmental groups that want control over the entire area and will do almost anything to get it regardless of human cost in death or injuries and the lack of care over those casualties.

Pakistani ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) investigator, Tarek Durrani, was quite shaken up while leading his first assignment but came through with minor scars. Tarek was summoned into his agency and told to report to another newer group for assignment. The IRE (International Relations Executive) was a rival of the ISI and Tarek was reluctant to take this new assignment but he was there for Pakistan where needed to help his nation. Tarek knew not what to expect as he met many new private and personal people, some governmental, some not, and some he could and some could not trust. He had to be on guard at all times but he was used to that.

A new dam had been built that had been a big point of friction between Bangladesh and India. The dam was huge and controlled water flow in a huge area making the area a very serious threat of terrorists. A dedication was scheduled and the terrorists planned to take it out the dam not caring how many or whom they killed in the process. Tarek and many other investigators worked together as well as apart not trusting each other. In the process of his investigation, Tarek met a lovely woman that was a luxury he had not been able to afford for many years due to his deeply involved work. As time went on he and Sahar found it hard to be apart but Tarek knew the extreme danger that his job entailed so he tried to discourage the relationship but eventually neither could get their mind off the other. It's called LOVE!

The story told by Duane Evans is fantastic. He knows from his life's work much about the espionage work and how it can take so much out of a person's life. There are no "down times" in North From Calcutta and the reader will learn much about the danger that a spy or anyone connected with a government working with any foreign nation endures. A great read.
